Extraordinary Heroism Story

This true story is an excerpt from "Beyond Valor: A WWII story of Extraordinary Heroism" by Erwin & Doyle

I am Praying for AmericaPrepare for the Battle!

On the morning of December 8, 1944, at Third Army headquarters, Gen. George Patton placed a call to a chaplain.  Weeks of heavy rains had stalled the Allied advance across Western Europe.  The legendary Patton, a churchgoing Episcopalian, was furious and desperate. He decided it was time to ask for God’s help.

He called the local chaplain for assistance, “We must do something about those rains if we are to win the war…How much praying is being done in the Third Army?”

The chaplain replied, “I am afraid to admit it, when there is fighting, everyone prays, but now with this constant rain, men just sit and wait for things to happen.”

“Chaplain,” Patton explained, “I am a strong believer in prayer.  There are three ways that men get what they want:  by planning, by working, and by praying….Between the plan and the operation there is always an unknown that spells defeat or victory, success, or failure.  Some people call that getting breaks; I call it God!  God has His part in everything.  That’s were prayer comes in.”

Patton ordered the chaplain to issue 3200 copies of a model prayer asking God to stop the rain to crush the oppression and wickedness of the enemy, directing them to exhort their men to “Pray alone.  Pray with others.  Pray by night and pray by day, Pray for the cessation of immoderate rains, for good weather for Battle.  Pray for the defeat of our wicked enemy whose banner is injustice and who’s good is oppression.  Pray for victory.  Pray for our Army, and Pray for Peace.”  The letter concluded: “With prayer we cannot fail.”

The rains continued, and Patton’s men kept fighting—and praying.  Then, on December 20, the rains stopped.  A full week of clear skies and ideal flying weather opened up, enabling allied planes to bomb and strafe the German positions and push Hitler’s army back!

Patton placed prayer as a necessary component of his strategy that required the rains to stop.  He got it!

Seek God’s Victory in your own life

Satan often seeks to destroy your peace and limit your influence

Week 2:  July 10-16

Seek God’s Victory within the Christian Community

Satan often seeks to incite disunity and division in the Body of Christ…

The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world…We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.    2 Corinthians 10:4-5

  • Pray for protection and encouragement for your pastor 2 Corinthians 12:9
  • Pray for unity of Southern Baptist churches and agencies working together in fulfilling the Great Commission. Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind. Peter 3:8
  • Pray for unreached people: Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest! John 4:35
  • Pray for new church plants to be successful in reaching our exploding population

Week 3

Week 3: July 17-23

Seek God’s Victory in Governments of the World

Satan often seeks to create chaos and lack of trust between individuals and groups

I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone—for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  This is good, and please God our Savior who wants all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.   I Timothy 2:1-4

  • Pray for all people in positions of authority to be reminded they are accountable to Almighty God for words and actions
  • Pray for all judges…from local JP to Supreme Court…to seek God’s Wisdom to act with integrity
  • Pray for strength and courage for the soldiers who are protecting Ukraine and for civilians who have been displaced
  • Pray that ALL dictators will be stopped
  • Pray for the safety of our military and first responders
  • Pray for the safety of the minds and bodies of our school children

    • to reach our community with the Good News of Jesus
