First Southern Baptist Church, Buckeye
Celebrated 100 years
A Century of Preaching Jesus and loving People!
First Southern Baptist Church of Buckeye was organized in 1925 with six charter members, all women, Mrs. Sam Hill and daughter, Clistie; Mrs. Ed Shepard and daughter, Gladys; Mrs. Rose Jones and daughter, Lora Nell; as the Eight Southern Baptist Church in Arizona. The first services were held at the City Hall/Jail. Eventually, the services were moved to a tent furnished by First Southern Baptist Church of Phoenix. In 1929, a portion of the present property on Third Street and Eason venue was acquired and in January of 1930, construction was started on the first church facility. It later became known as the “Old Rock Church.” By January of 1930, the membership had grown to 68 people.
Almost 100 years have passed since those six ladies met with a vision of Southern Baptist Church in Buckeye. They could never have dreamed what God would do in this small rural desert community. The life and ministry of First Southern Baptist Church of Buckeye has been challenging, exciting and varied. Their history is a testimony to what God can do through families and individuals who commit themselves to work, worship, and fellowship together.
